Dr Kirby, a Royal Society Research Fellow studies the DNA of planktonic organisms to understand their biology and collaborates with the Sir Alistair Hardy Foundation for Ocean Science, which is also based in Plymouth. Phytoplankton account for about 50% of the photosynthesis on earth and can act as an early indicator of alterations in the Earth’s climate, but our knowledge of many important aspects of their biology is limited and the work Dr Kirby is doing in Plymouth has global DNA significance.
